ABSTRACT This study analysed the Effectiveness of Reading Intervention for struggling readers of Grade 1 pupils of St. Paul College of Makati. It was conducted among the 51 grade 1 pupils belonging to struggling readers of St. Paul College of Makati. It was revealed that there is a great need for an immediate intervention on the reading ability of the students that will reduce or more preferably, eliminate the risks brought by poor reading to their future journeys. It was also pointed out that reading intervention administered have greatly improved the reading ability of the respondents which can be added to the evidenced-based success of reading interventions in the learning process of students struggling to read in Grade 1. Thus, the results of this study proved that one good treatment particularly for the learning problems in reading is an appropriate intervention that targets the necessary competencies of students on the subject. It was also evident that the significant difference as well as the significant increase in the reading ability scores of the respondents during the post-test presents another positive effect of reading interventions. Therefore, it can be concluded that the utilized reading intervention has adequately targeted the competencies needed by the pupils to efficiently learn how to read. As the impact is felt, the research showed that the pupils who received the Reading Intervention Program made higher gains in reading.

ABSTRACT This study is an attempt to show the effects of using recreational mathematics on the mastery of basic mathematical facts of the Grade Three pupils of Plaridel Elementary School during School Year, 2010-2011. There were sixty (60) Grade Three pupils (30 pupils for the experimental group, divided equally between male and female, and another 30 for the control group) selected randomly to assess the possible effects of recreational mathematics on their numeracy test performance. Random sampling was used in the selection of the respondents with the use of lottery sampling or the fishbowl technique. The study yields the following findings. Among the 30 respondents in the experimental group, 15 or 25% were male and 15 or 25% were female Out of the 30 respondents of the control group, 13 or 21.67% were male and 17 or 28.33% were female. Recreational mathematics such as damath, word games, sudoku puzzles and dice games worked "to a great extent on the computational and problem-solving skills of the respondents. In the mastery of the basic facts, pupils showed better understanding in the four fundamental operations. Ironically, no significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores in the numeracy test performance of the respondents was observed, and there was no significant relationship between recreational mathematics and numeracy test performance of the respondents, either. Based on the significant findings of the study, the following conclusions were reached: Since the findings revealed that recreational mathematics such as damath, word games, sudoku puzzles and dice games work to a great extent on the computational and problem-solving skills of the respondents, they must have found recreational mathematics enjoyable and interesting. Inasmuch as there was no significant difference observed between the pre-test and post-test scores in the numeracy test performance of the respondents, the findings imply that recreational mathematics had no bearing on the respondents' numeracy test performance. Also, it was established that even in the absence of recreational mathematics pupils will still perform well in Math as evidenced by the absence of a significant relationship between recreational mathematics and numeracy test performance of the respondents. The researcher therefore recommends the use of recreational mathematics best suited to the pupils' age, gender, level of interest and abilities. Further, results of the numeracy tests in the four arithmetic operations should be carefully analyzed by Mathematics teachers to identify the pupils' strengths and weaknesses, and remedial measures be taken where necessary through tutoring, peer teaching and cooperative learning. Moreover, a parallel study on the pupils' difficulty in computational and problem-solving skills is in order to improve their level of proficiency in Mathematics. Mathematics teachers should also continue to find ways and means to make mathematics learning enjoyable and interesting to pupils. Additionally, teachers should focus more on the content of the subject matter than on spending more time in using the recreational games. Finally, a further study is recommended in relation to this present study.

ABSTRACT The Performance of Education and Non-Education Graduates in the 2017 Licensure Examination for Teachers and its Implication on Educational Curriculum Development was assessed and evaluated. A total of 388 examinees from Universidad de Manila (UDM) were considered for this study; where 301 were Education graduates and 87 were Non-education graduates. Primary data for this study were obtained from Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), UDM's Registrar's Office, College of Education, and Office of Student Affairs. Analysis of the data revealed that the overall performance of Universidad de Manila in 2017 LET was above the national passing percentage. The Education graduates' passing rate was higher than the Non-Education graduates. Furthermore, the overall mean average rating of Education graduates was higher compared to the overall mean average rating of Non-education graduates. Results of the study showed difference in their performance according to programs. The Education graduates performed better in the general education, professional education and major/specialization subjects compared to the Non-education graduates. It was suggested that the UDM College of Education should offer an Enriched Teacher Education Program for Non-education graduates which may include in-house review with mock examination for graduates who will be taking the LET and intensify the institute's faculty development program.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to ascertain the correlation between reading comprehension and academic performance of the grade 10 students of Cavite School of Life. Ninety-nine (99) grade 10 students were utilized as respondents of the study. Results revealed that in general, the grade 10 students from both schools have very satisfactory performance in reading comprehension as assessed by the teachers and students themselves. On the other hand, the academic performance of the learners in both campuses was found to be alarming on all areas, namely written works, performance task and quarterly assessment Furthermore, the significant statistical difference found between teacher and student's self-evaluation was attributed on how the competencies for each area were communicated by the teachers to the learners which indicate proper information dissemination among students. The higher assessment on the part of the learners means that they perceive they have exceeded their teachers' expectations on the subject area The non-significance in the difference between the teacher and the learner's assessment in the reading comprehension areas indicates that teachers and the learners see the learner's performance considerably on the same level. A strong relationship exists between the reading comprehension of the learners and their academic performance in the English subject. Due to the foregoing results, a preventive intervention program for Grades 10 students was proposed which aims to improve their reading comprehension skills and enhance their academic performance.
